The madness of WW2 lead mankind to create an ultimate weapon, the atomic bomb. The first atomic bomb test was set for July 16 1945 in the New Mexico desert at a sight called Trinity. On July 23 1945, President Truman signed an order to use these atomic bombs on Japanese civilians.
Since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japanese zen monks have pondered the question of how to end this horrible circle of death and destruction...
In Buddhism, there is no concept of war. These monks believe that everything in the universe moves in a circle, what goes around comes around. They believe that the first atomic bomb test in the American desert on July 16 1945 opened a new circle in the universe, one that would lead to the end of all living things. 22 days later the circle of death found its way to Hiroshima killing 200,000 people, and three days after that, it continued, killing 77,000 people in Nagasaki. After the atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima, Japanese monks who had been away, returned to find the city on fire. From the embers of one temple, a flame was candled and kept burning. This is the atomic flame which embodies the essence of the atomic bomb. To hold this circle of destruction at Nagasaki, the monks kept the atomic flame alive praying that their self sacrifice would somehow stop it from ending all life on the planet. If the flame was returned to the exact place where it was created on the day marking 60 years since the circle opened at the Trinity site, the circle could be closed. The "Cause" and "Effect", "Fate" and "Destiny" would be broken. The atomic flame in Hoshino, Fukuoka Prefecture, kept alive since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, was used to light a lantern and this flame was taken to the United States. The flame was carried on foot from San Francisco to Trinity Site in New Mexico, where the world's first atomic bomb test was performed.

"Atomic Flame" ("Gate" in Japanese) is the dramatic footage of the 2,500-kilometer-long walk across the desert and over mountains. The journey began on July 16, 2005, the test date anniversary, and ended on Aug. 9, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Upon arrival at Trinity Site, the borrowed flame was ceremoniously extinguished as 125 people, including Japanese monks as well as American citizens who were exposed to radiation near nuclear test sites, looked on. The 25-day-trip was made into a one hour, 40 minute film.
The people of Nagasaki continue to pray that they would be the last city ever subjected to an atomic bomb attack. Matt Taylor wants to open the gate of people's hearts through the film.
Journey to the centre of the Earth ~ Konoike Tomoko
There is a curious warning at the entrance to the Tomoko Konoike exhibit at Tokyo Opera City : “This exhibition includes galleries with low entrances, dark spaces, slopes, and works that are designed to stimulate the visitor’s sense of touch and smell including lily. Please inform the reception if you are allergic to animal fur.”
Welcome to a world “where beauty and disgust do not yet exist.”
The exhibition has been designed to evoke a journey through the earth’s geological strata. As you travel from the crust to the centre, you will reach the earth’s “heart of darkness” – the root of human imagination. Along this journey, you can appreciate Konoike’s works as an imaginative traveller.
The exhibition contains a variety of media. There are paintings – the massive four-part《Story Series》(2004-06); animation 《mimio-Odyssey》; drawings – including original drawing of 《mimio》,《Open Book Series》 and《Book Burning-World of Wonder》; sculptures – 《Virginia》and 《Inter-traveller》; and Fusuma paintings –《Hidden Mountain》and the new work《Shira-Spirit from the Wild》.

The climax is “the centre of the earth.” There, you will encounter the new installation《Earth Baby》(09), which invokes both the earth’s rotation and its rebirth.
To counter the sense of hopelessness associated with the present day, KONOIKE invites us to consider the power of art through “play” and its full use of imaginative engagement. KONOIKE here draws upon the Japanese ancient derivation of “play” (asobi) which refers to shamanistic retrieval of the soul of the recently departed. These “players” retrieved souls between dimensions, where the soul was like an “inter-traveller” between the living and the beyond. KONOIKE metaphorically employs this sense of “play” between dimensions to claim art’s ability to release the body’s soul and invoke its interior spirit.
“Don’t sit there gazing at a painting…get outside and feel the wind. Don’t mutter the lines of some old poem, get moving and create some friction. If you don’t keep playing, traveling all around and causing all kinds of friction, until you’re so tired you can’t speak, you’ll never stoke the fires of a robust imagination.”
The true story of the 47 ronin (masterless samurai) of the province of Harima is probably the best-known story of the valor and ideals (the Code of Bushido) of Japan's famous samurai warriors.
At the heart of Japan is the samurai code of "bushido." Bushido literally means the "Way of the Warrior". It was the code, the way of life of the Samurai : courtesy and courage, sincerity and self-control, honor and loyalty.
The story begins in 1701. The Shogun Tsunayoshi lived and ruled from Edo (known today as Tokyo), while the Emperor lived in Kyoto. To show respect to the Emperor, Tsunayoshi sent gifts and envoys to Kyoto for the New Year's celebrations, and in return, the Emperor sent his own envoys to Edo in March. To receive the Imperial envoys, Tsunayoshi appointed two young daimyos (feudal provincial lords), Naganori Asano-Takuminokami, The Lord of the Castle of Ako in Harima Province, and Munehare Date, Lord of Sendai to act as hosts during the forthcoming visit of a member of the Imperial Court in Kyoto. Because the daimyos were inexperienced in entertaining high born guests, the Shogun appointed an elderly high official named Yoshinaka Kira-Kozukenosuke to assist them.
But Kira disliked Asano and treated him with malice and disgraced his honor as a samurai. Kira used every opportunity to publicly humiliate Asano. After months of abuse, Asano's tolerance was gone.
On March 14, Asano drew his sword in the Edo Castle and struck Kira cutting him on his forehead and shoulder. It was strictly forbidden to draw one's sword within the Edo castle at that time and Asano was immediately arrested. There was also a law which punished both samurais involved in a fight so both Asano and Kira were expected to be punished. However, while Kira received no punishment, Asano was sentenced to death by seppuku (hara-kiri) on the very same day. By law, when a samurai committed seppuku, his castle was confiscated, his family was disinherited, and his 321 samurai retainers were ordered to disband, thus becoming ronin or masterless warriors.
Oishi Kuranosuke, Asano's Chief Councilor, decided on a plan to avenge Lord Asano's disgrace by killing Kira. Only this would restore Asano's rightful honor. The men split up to conceal their plans from Kira, who naturally suspected that Asano's retainers would try to get revenge against him. Oishi went to Yamashina, a suburb of Kyoto, where he earned a reputation as a drunken gambler, to deceive the Shogun's police and Kira's many spies. The ruses worked. Kira and his allies finally relaxed their suspicions of Oishi and his men.
Almost two years after the fateful incident, at a secret meeting, Oishi and the other 59 ronin decided that the time had come to move against Kira. But Oishi would allow only 46 of the men to participate with him in the attempt. He sent the other 13back home to their families.
One by one Oishi and his men infiltrated Edo, and on a snowy winter night of December 14, 1702 the 47 ronin attacked the mansion of Kira while he was having a tea party.
In the great battle that followed, the 47 ronin stormed the mansion, killing all of Kira’s guards without a single loss of their own.
They found Kira hiding in an outhouse. The ronin brought Kira to the courtyard and offered him the chance to honorably commit seppuku. Kira refused, so Oishi beheaded him with the same sword that Asano had used to end his own life. Then the 47 returned to Asano's grave at Sengaku-ji Temple and set Kira's head before it, declaring their Lord's honor redeemed.
Prepared to die for their deed, Oishi sent two delegates to the Magistrate of Edo, informing him of what had been done and telling the official that they would be waiting at the Sengaku-ji Temple, awaiting orders from the Shogun.
The Shogun Tsunayoshi, instead of being angry, was deeply impressed with the loyalty demonstrated by the 47 ronin. Tsunayoshi was faced with a dilemma. Should he spare the 47 ronin in recognition of their great display of bushido and their defense of their Lord Asano's honor, or should they be punished according to the law. After 47 days of deliberation, Tsunayoshi ordered that Oishi and 45 of his men were to execute themselves not as criminals but as honored warriors. The youngest of the ronin, who had been sent to Ako with the news of Kira's death was spared from the sentence.
On February 4, 1703, Oishi and the other 45 ronin all committed seppuku simultaneously, dignifying themselves in their valiant sacrifice. Upon their deaths, the 46 ronin were buried side by side next to their master at Sengaku-ji Temple.
Each year thousands of Japanese visit the gravesite of the 46 ronin at Sengaku-ji Temple to pay homage to the honor and loyalty of the 47 ronin and their dedication to the code of bushido.
The avenge of the Ako Gishi has been made into various plays and is now commonly called Chushingura (the Story of the Loyal Retainers). It is a popular tale and one that still touches the Japanese heart even after 300 years. The chivalry of the loyal retainers and the themes of Gi (justice) and Chu (loyalty) are still highly esteemed by the Japanese.
The Japanese national legend has been adapted for the big screen at least six times.

Meu bem, freshly arrived from Japan, and I went to spend the last weekend of May in the "Vallée des Merveilles", Valley of the Wonders.
40 km north of Nice, in the Mercantour Park, Mount Bego (2,872 m) dominates the Valley of "Merveilles" and the Valley of Fontanalba shaped and polished by ancient glaciers that melted 10,000 years ago, leaving finely polished rocks and lakes.After 3 hours and a half and some difficulties to stay on the trail due to the snow, we finally reached the refuge des Merveilles.
On the next day we climbed the mysterious Mount Bego...
Despite the fact that the snow prevented us from seeing any petroglyphs, the ascencion was magic... The following day, the melting snow gave way to a multitude of sprouting wild spring flowers.
On the way down via "Baisse de Vallaurette", the scenery is simply beautiful.
The people of the South Alps came up here because of the water–it was dry in the valley. They were first of all hunters, then 6000 years B.C. they became shepherds and farmers. The lakes, brooks and storms pushed the first farmers and shepherds to consider Mount Bego as dispenser of fertilizing water and to identify it to the sky divinity sowing the earth. The storms around Mount Bego were terrific and terrible. People believed the god of lightning was here, and they came to pray for rain.
4000 rocks with nearly 40,000 engravings that evoke the daily lives and concerns of men in the Copper and Bronze Age have been found. These rock carvings are a schematic symbolic language whose study should allow us to understand our ancestors´ way of thinking, traditional rites and myths. Almost half of these petroglyphs are rectangular shapes surmounted by two horns, schematic representations of the bovine. According to H. de Lumley, they represent bulls, the Mediterranean symbol of virility that fertilises mother earth. They were also said to canalise cosmic forces. Other iconographic themes are hundreds of daggers, halberds, hatchets, bows and geometrical figures: squares, rectangles, circles, cross linked shapes with 2, 3, 4, 6 cases or more, ovals, stars, rectangular lines... Some figures, like the zigzags on the Mount Bego’s rocks represent the water springing from the rocks. Recently, other researchers have identified in these rock carvings the primitive couple of Indo-European rituals, as well as astronomy symbols.
